Jonathan: the most popular song in India

Last Wednesday was  Shivratri, the day when all unmarried Indian women fast for their future husbands.  It is observed by a surprising number of people — urban, rural, wealthy, and poor.  Meanwhile, in an ode to this country’s existence within a liminal globalized space, the song “Sheila Ki Jawani” (translated roughly to “Sheila’s Youth” in which ‘youth’ is synonymous with ‘sexy’) is currently on top all the charts (click the post title for a link).  We even heard it playing from speakers on our dawn walk to the temple that morning.
